Sulfur dioxide is the main pollutant associated with Nornickel’s metal products manufacturing facilities. In order to convert sulfur dioxide into sulfuric acid, one more plant has to be built next to each smelter in Norilsk. Acid is subsequently converted into gypsum. After Nornickel’s Kola division completed the project, sulfur dioxide emissions dropped by 90% in the factory area. We plan to achieve the same result for the Nadezhda Smelter in Norilsk.
VLADIMIR ZHUKOV,
Nornickel Vice President for Investor Relations and Sustainable Development:
“We are currently redesigning the project, since some foreign companies refused to work with us. But this is our flagship project, and we will find new suppliers for it. Despite all the challenges, the project is near completion at the Nadezhda Smelter.”
