A 518 kW solar power plant scheduled for start-up in 2025 in the Trans-Baikal Region

Nornickel’s pilot project to scale up renewable energy technologies is underway in the Gazimuro-Zavodsky District of the Trans-Baikal Region.
Using solar energy will allow the company to reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon footprint of its products.

The site for the project was chosen for two reasons:

  1. The Trans-Baikal Region is among the top locations in Russia in terms of the amount of insolation it receives,
  2. In the Gazimuro-Zavodsky District, there is a shift camp for Bystrinkoye mining company, which is part of Nornickel’s Trans-Baikal division.

Set for start-up in the second half of 2025, the power plant will produce at least 518 kW of electricity.

“Having our own renewable energy source will help us reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon footprint of our products. Electricity for the shift camp will come from the solar power plant during the day and from the centralized power source at night.”
According to Stepan Oveshnikov, Bystra’s chief power engineer, the company and the contractor developed preliminary engineering solutions and determined the optimal capacity of the pilot plant. Throughout the useful life of the facility, a kilowatt of electricity will cost about 3.8 rubles. This is a good result for the Trans-Baikal Region.
