Water disinfection with palladium

Pool water is usually disinfected with sodium hypochlorite or bleach. Nornickel is testing the use of sodium chloride, or salt. The development uses electrolysis.
Special palladium catalysts convert sodium chloride into a disinfecting agent, formed in precise quantities needed for the process. The development is set for completion in 2023. The palladium-based catalytic layer is expected to improve electrolysis efficiency and extend the life of catalytic coating.

VITALY BUSKO,
Vice President for Innovation at Nornickel:

“The holding not only produces palladium, but also explores the possibilities of its use in products involving a more sophisticated process. Water disinfection with electrolysis is only commencing its rise, but it has the potential to become a baseline process and be used for drinking water treatment."
