Nornickel tops first mining and metals industry ESG ranking

Nornickel has topped the first ESG ranking of the mining and metal industry released by RAEX
The ranking was compiled by RAEX agency based on a survey using data from 144 companies for 2024. With 21 companies included in the survey, mining and metals is the biggest category in the ranking.
The ranking was compiled by evaluating ESG practices and reporting across the business sector. The analysis was based on 23 universal metrics and 1 specific metric, which were compared against average values, leading to a rating for each position across all 144 survey participants. A thorough evaluation of the companies' activities related to tailing dumps was chosen as a specific metric for mining and metals.

Mining and metals companies stood out in the ranking based on their accomplishments in each ESG component and across all universal metrics defining these components.

Nornickel received a total score of 81.5 in the Environmental component, compared to an industry average of 59.25 and a general average of 33.52. In this component, the metrics relating to supply chain environmental risks, water consumption and biodiversity show the biggest deviation from the average. This meant that Nornickel's mission statement on biodiversity conservation fully meets the agency's requirements.

The mining and metals companies included in the survey also stand out as leaders in the Social component, compared against the generalized ranking data. With a general average of 48.81 and an industry average of 67.04, Nornickel received 80.76 points. Respect for human rights and engagement with local communities yielded the highest scores. Nornickel invested about RUB 3 billion in initiatives to engage with indigenous peoples in 2023.

In the Governance component, the average scores of mining and metals companies are not significantly different from the average across the ranking. However, Nornickel holds the top spot here too: 90.6 points, with an industry average of 68.36 and a general average of 55.01.
