By virtue of
the Sulfur Program, it is the most environmentally sustainable metallurgical plant in the world today. Even though its first train was put into operation back in 1979.
22 thousand people were engaged in construction. During peak load periods, 600 trucks, 150 excavators, bulldozers and graders, and 150 cranes have been working at the site. For the first time in the USSR, structures were mounted using a helicopter.
Operations have been redesigned, and today the plant can process up to 2.4 million tons of nickel-containing feedstock per year.
