A Gyrfalcon
The Gyrfalcon is the largest and rarest of the falcon species. Due to poaching, climate change and human impact, its population has decreased by two thirds over the past 20 years. There are currently 3,500 to 5,000 breeding pairs of this species in Russia. In September 2023, in acknowledgement of the species’ value, Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and the UAE adopted a framework declaration of intent for the conservation of the gyrfalcon population.
Nornickel invested 50 mln rubles in the preservation of rare birds in Taimyr and on the Kola Peninsula. Researchers will run genetic research and set up a system for tracking gyrfalcons with satellite transmitters.
