Nornickel dismantles dilapidated buildings and recycles industrial waste, undertakes cleaning and remediation of territories and lands

The full-scale cleaning program at the industrial sites is designed until 2031. Nornickel allocated RUB 3.4 bn for this purpose.

The maps of derelict sites were prepared, volumes of waste were calculated, and 124 special-purpose machines were procured. At the same time, a new lease of life is given to the obsolete sites: some of the buildings are refurbished to become museums.

Metal structures are recycled as metal scrap, concrete chips are used for backfilling old mines. The Program implementation is ahead of schedule.
Stanislav Seleznev, Nornickel Vice President for HSE, talks about clean-up of old industrial sites
STANISLAV SELEZNEV,
Nornickel Vice President for HSE:

“Over the period of three years we dismantled about 350 buildings and structures, removed 1 mt of waste, and cleaned territory exceeding 4 mln sq. meters.

The cost of implementing the Program on account of purchasing the machinery reached RUB 14.5 bn. We remember that at the start of the Program there were 500 derelict buildings in Norilsk and 2 mt of waste. Hence, we understand: more than 50% of the targets for 10 years have been achieved over only three years”.
