The marine fleet consists of six ice-class vessels. The main ‘workhorses’ are container ships. A container ship holds up to 18 thousand tons of cargo, while the capacity of a tanker is 15 thousand tons of gas condensate or liquid fuel.
Container ships are able to navigate 1.7 m thick ice-covered waters of the Northern Sea without icebreaker assistance. Every year, they carry Nornickel’s metallurgical products to the ports of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk, and return to deliver food and industrial goods to people living in the Far North.

The spinning and stern-first movement of Nornickel’s container ships are enabled by the Azipod propulsion unit. It contains an electric motor driving the propeller, fixed into one compact unit. The system can rotate 360 degrees about the vertical axis.
Azipod allows the ship to be more maneuverable and spin in a circle which eliminates the need for a rudder. Azipod is operated by the captain from the deck house using a controller or computer.

The Dudinka’s main purpose is to break the ice and provide safe waterways for ships to lay up in the Dudinka port at the mouth of the Yenisei. The icebreaker also clears ships of ice before they leave the berth after loading.
The Dudinka is the oldest ship on Nornickel’s fleet. It was built in Finland back in 1970. Compared to other ships, the Dudinka is not as impressive in size and power with only 12,000 horsepower (Monchegorsk, for instance, has 24,500). Still, the ship easily plows through 1.5m ice. Chain boats were widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to transport goods along fast-flowing rivers but became unnecessary when powerful engines became commonplace.
There are currently only two such boats left in the world, and one of them is operated by Nornickel’s Yenisei River Shipping Company.
The Yenisei chain boat is a diesel-electric vessel with a towing winch. It is used to haul other loaded ships or barges upstream through the very powerful waves of Kazachinsky rapids of the Yenisei.
In this spot, a steel chain is laid on the bed of the river. The chain boat moves ahead, winds the chain with a heavy winch and pulls other ships along. This ensures stable movement, regardless of the current or wind. Five engines of the chain boat can haul up to 10 thousand tons of cargo.
There is no intention to give up the rare piece, as the Yenisei is one of the most difficult rivers in Russia to navigate.
